Love to Hear Percussion By Irene A. Masiello
Simsbury, CT. [SNN] Percussionist extraordinaire, artist and awesome spirit Rob Fried spoke with SNN about music’s role in his spirituality. He stated that creativity, for him, is the closest state of spirit-based awareness and experience he can attain. Rob has played percussion for 30 years 26 of which were with New England’s popular Max Creek. He also played with Greg Piccolo from A Room Full of Blues and has been recorded on over 75 albums and CDs. Recently, art has been Rob’s focus with the creation of a collection of lovely multi-media drawings. Fried shared his views that visuals and audio are a trade offs of line, form, texture and color into music and their expressions are interchangeable. Rob stated that music & art are a “feeling kind of thing for me and I go with my deepest feelings; I have to feel it in my soul. When I do, I know its right.” Rob explained that he achieves an altered state when he reaches within himself to express sound, color, form for “certainly, it is beyond the physical reality for me.” He urges those who are music and art aficionados to go within music and art into an altered state of consciousness.
Rob encourages bringing one’s senses alive one at a time while experiencing any artistic form from watching nature to listening to or playing music or sketching a tree whose form captivates your attention. He encourages us to go beyond the 5 physical senses of in our everyday experiences.

He expressed a concern that “too many of us sleep walk our way through life unaware that there is so much going on. You can increase your life quality by simply taking an extra moment and making an effort to see beyond the obvious. Take it in, take a deep breath and merge with it. Feel it, it’s a pulse of universal energy, it’s the rhythm of life, it’s a natural high. We need to make spirituality a lifestyle and it’s easier than we think. Being environmentally aware is key to the experience in more ways than one. Once one sees nature with reverence you are on your way to seeing God’s church.”

He encourages us to truly see what the artist expresses in much the same way. Rob suggests we all tune into the emotion and feelings the artist is expressing to heighten any artistic ex-perience. He also feels that we need to expand our awareness and consciousness on many levels including politically, socially and internationally. Rob feels strongly that we must support the arts and understand the challenges facing artists and musicians economically and creatively. Rob pointed out that because of budget cuts school programs dedicated to art and music face serious challenges. He stated: “children require more than nurturing of their minds and bodies; creativity in kids is so pure and innovative and that needs to be cultivated and appreciated.” In these days of electronic communication Rob urges us all not to lose “the human touch for once again interacting with someone else is not a one dimensional experience.” Reach Rob at the Rhythm Shop in Simsbury, CT at (860) 658-7578 Irene A.
